Today some one was asking about how to price art.
Although there are many ways to do this, and many artist have different methods
From my experiences I find there are several things that are key elements to consider
Material.
This is straight forward, in general this is exactly what something cost times two.
( normal used for traditional work or material goods )
example
Canvas 10 dollars, 5 dollars for paint , 2 dollars for brushes , and maybe about 5-10 dollars for miscellaneous cost that you may not think about
so say you agree that the final cost is 27 dollars, simply multiply that by 2 to get the final cost for the product.
Final cost for painting 54 dollars
Time.
This may be one of the harder ways to charge for your work
the key is self evaluation, or perhaps the advice of some one that you have a great deal of trust with.
Ill base this example on my self.
There is a wide range and even for me this can be tricky to explain
ill estimate that a drawing takes me about 1 hr to do ( base on this assumption ill come up with the rest of my cost starting from the base cost )
1 hr drawing ( base cost ) will never be cheaper then 15 dollars
( so I agreed to work at 15 dollars an hr )
if I take more time to do the work then agreed to eat the cost and maintain the cost of 15 dollars
( unless the work was more difficult then I assessed it to be , which is a skill that you need to have if you want to charge for your work ) in general there seems to be a market price for art work and speed and skill level that you constantly need to consider. ( note I am making this stand out more because of a recent question on stream )
Experience
different artist can charge different amounts , in my example I agree to work at 15 dollars an hr
in my opinion this is the lowest rate a artist should work at ( unless the work is easier )
it is important to know the kind of work your doing, in my example I am evaluating a drawing
different levels of experience
Beginner/ apprenticethis is some one with 1-4 years of experience equivalent to ap/gt art class in high school 15 dollars an hr some one at this level will add the cost of material and add that to the 15 dollars an hr. so basically cost is paid for and you get a agreed pay of 15 dollars an hr
( note the evaluation of per her changes a bit from artist to artist however there are some basic standards to go by and researching others art will help you get a general idea of cost if they are the same approximate skill level )
intermediate
although there is overlap this is general some one who has work, part time, full time in some way and has been paid as a artist or artistic field.
With new interest, and media the word of art carriers has change dramatically since when I started out.
So this includes any one who is a content creater, on Instagram, you tube , twitch , peatreon ….
that is earning some income from the art they are doing.
In general it is a artist job to challenge society, working as a self employed artist is now more possible because of media and technology, competition and market play a bigger role along with target audience and understanding every aspect of how to make it as a entrepreneur
in the past many artist were found because of comics, news papers and other media, so media and society drives how art function and how artist can use that information in order to achieve their goals ( and to a point this is a duel relationship because the artist effect the media )
making change is the challenge of a artist, creating a new way the view the world is the dream.
method
style
and probably most of all business
